Visiting Vatican City, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Basilica (and stops at the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon)
Jamie did a great job of preparing us for our Vatican experience. He pointed out many of the Vatican Museum's treasures and explained the significance of each priceless masterpiece, in a way that everyone (not only trained art critics) could understand and appreciate. He has a unique way of building a frame of reference for the first-time (or repeat) visitors — helping us connect the dots between the art, politics, and religion of the day. Having this knowledge helped us understand how these relationships influenced one another throughout Roman history. Understanding the major historical events in Italy's history made our trip to Vatican City much more meaningful.
After visiting the Vatican Museums, we moved on to the remarkable Sistine Chapel (yes, through the back door, and without waiting in the long lines!) and the awe-inspiring St. Peter's Basilica — which produced sensory overload — enough to leave a person speechless. Later that day we embarked on another walking tour, including the famed Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and other notable stops on our way to the trendy Trastevere area of Rome where we enjoyed our last group dinner together.
